PreDOE: Basic Statistics for Experimenters (2-3 hrs of content)

If you have never taken a statistics class, you may need a jump start before doing Design of Experiments (DOE). PreDOE is an entry-level course for technicians, managers and professionals who need a review of the basics. This is not an academic class—it's a hands-on presentation of practical statistical tools needed to succeed using design of experiments.  Through the use of interactive exercises and tutorials, you will learn concepts of statistical thinking, risk management, t-testing and analysis of variance (ANOVA). You no longer need to be intimidated by statistics!

Registration for this free web-based training course provides you with access to the course materials for 120 days.

Our objective for PreDOE is to keep it simple and make it fun. After mastering these simple tools, you'll be ready to move on to the 2-day Experiment Design Made Easy live workshop, or more of our e-learning courses. Upon successful completion of the course (which involves passing the final test with a score of 80% or higher) you may print a course completion certificate.

Pre-Test (5 min)

  • Optional pre-test to assess your skills

Section 1: Basic Statistics (1 hour)

  • Statistical thinking
  • Causes of variation—common & special causes
  • Design-Expert Simple Sample tutorial

Section 2: Risk Management (1 hour)

  • Introduction to risk (alpha and beta risk)
  • t-testing
  • Design-Expert t-statistic tutorial

Section 3: Analysis of Variance (1 hour)

  • Explore ANOVA
  • Using the p-value to make decisions
  • Using the one-factor plot with LSD bars
  • Design-Expert One Factor tutorial

Final Exam (15 min)

  • 20 questions
